Universidad del Sagrado Corazón and Sagrado Global are a nonprofit organization 501c3.
The Sagrado-MIT Pre-College Summer Program is a summer internship and mentoring program designed for high school students in grades 9 (freshman), 10 (sophomore), and 11 (juniors) who are interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering and/or math (STEM) with a focus in neuroscience. The program provides its young scholars with interactive seminars and hands-on activities to learn about STEM careers, research methods, career development, effective communication skills, and college applications, among others. We had 2 very successful years, with students winning science fairs and being admitted to prestigious universities such as MIT, Yale University, Notre Dame University, Cornell University, Georgia Tech, and University of Puerto Rico! See our news below.
The program was designed such that scholars were going to spend 2 weeks at the University of Sagrado Corazón (Puerto Rico) where they were going to interact with scientists and professors from Puerto Rico, and 2 weeks at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT] where they were going to be exposed to different research laboratories, world-renowned scientists, and a variety of educational opportunities for young people in STEM.
Due to the pandemic, the program has been, and will continue to be, conducted virtually for 8 weeks. By the end of the summer, the scholars have a greater understanding of the rich diversity of career paths in STEM and tools that increase their confidence in achieving a successful career, as well as a network of mentors and advisors who continue to provide support after the program concludes. Overall, this program provides Puerto Rican young students with opportunities and experiences that allow them to be better prepared to pursue a career in STEM, while also supporting diversity and inclusion in STEM.
